In the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity, it seems some cybercriminals are reverting to old tactics. It’s a surprising turn of events, but one that underscores the need for continued vigilance. We at Systemic Digital, Calgary’s leading managed services provider, have noticed an uptick in a rather old-school cyber attack strategy: unsolicited USB drives.
The Microsoft Office ‘Update’ Scam
In this iteration of the attack, businesses are receiving USB drives through the mail, apparently sent by Microsoft. These USBs are marketed as important Office updates that need to be installed. Once plugged into a computer, the USB falsely flags a virus and prompts the user to call a ‘support’ number. The criminals on the other end then gain your trust by ‘resolving’ the issue and subsequently ask for payment details for a ‘subscription’.
Constant Vigilance is Key
We’ve grown accustomed to threats coming through our inboxes and may overlook the possibility of physical threats like a USB drive arriving in the mail. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of continuous vigilance and the necessity to question any unsolicited hardware or software.
Review Your Policies with Systemic Digital
Now may be an opportune time to review your company’s policies regarding software and hardware usage. How are updates handled? What should employees do when they receive unsolicited physical media? Effective training and clear policies can be instrumental in preventing such attacks.
